The newly reformed Renton FC are a club following a great footballing dynasty from a small villiage in the West of Scotland.
This new club from its inception has been different, it started with three people discussing how they felt the time was right to reawaken the sleeping giant that was Renton FC. During these discussions it was highlighted that many different clubs and villages had started teams but that if Renton FC was going to be resurrected that it had to be more than just a football team. From this discussion then came not only the clubs motto of “More than just a football team” but actually the principles that govern it.
This ethos was never more apparent than when it came to
sponsorship. Renton FC was approached by several different companies wanting to have their name emblazoned on the front of what they regard as sacred shirts, remembering at this time that the club had very little money, the decision was taken to reject these offers and to approach two charities with the proposal that Renton FC in-fact pay 1/3rd of all profits accrued to each charity to have their organisations names on the front of the shirts. The two charities that have a lot of significance to all concerned with the club is Anekeal Rehabilitation Education And Development (READ) Centre and Cancer research UK.
The READ Centre is a grass-roots nongovernmental
organisation promoting participatory development in India.
READ has pioneered in health, human rights education,
environmental protection, and economic development in
Huliyar and Handanakere, Tumkur district, Karanataka, south India. The village of Renton through one of Renton FC’s founder members has a direct link with READ, he and other members of Renton’s community have been fundraising and visiting India over the past five years.
Cancer research UK is a charity that needs no introduction
and has a special place in most peoples hearts, a charity
that again had an emotive meaning to founder members of the club and the wider community.
As a result of this decision to pay these charities to have
their logo on the front of the shirts, Renton FC will begin
its no doubt meteoritic journey back to the top, safe in
the knowledge that since its inception on the 7th February
2008 it has taken six months to join the likes of Barcelona
as a club who are willing to say no to large jersey
sponsorship deals in favour doing the right thing and being
more than just a football team.
When Renton F.C. won the World Cup, the footballing world was in its infancy in 1888, almost exclusively played by Scottish and English clubs. It was a World Cup Championship! . They won the Scottish Cup with a 6-1 thrashing of Cambuslang F.C. Then they humbled English Cup holders West Bromwich Albion, who had prepared in Scotland for two weeks. The score was 4-1 in front of a record 10,000 fans at Hampden Park. Renton endorsed their title with an away win against “The Invincibles” of Preston North End. A “Champion of the World” sign was proudly displayed on the pavilion at Tontine Park. They were ahead of their time in training for stamina and strength. Their weapon was Renton’s own famous “chicken bree”, the ingredients never disclosed but it was probably port wine switched with a couple of eggs administered daily.
